West End History Tour

Join us as we explore Portland’s beautiful and historic West End. This tour comprises a 2+hour walk viewing churches and cathedrals, museums, squares and statues, and the beautiful residential areas along the Western Promenade.

Portland’s long and colorful history dates back to 1632, but this tour focuses mainly on the bustling life in the 1800-1900’s. Along this beautiful route, some highlights include:

  • The lives and times of wealthy sea captains
  • The Irish Immigration and their contributions, including Portland native John Ford, who became a famously successful Hollywood producer
  • The owners of the Victorian Mansion, built in 1860, and Portland’s ongoing preservation efforts
  • The life and literature of Maines famous poet, Henry David Longfellow, and his 1893 statue
  • The works of Portland’s famous architect, John Calvin Stevens including his private residence.
  • Some very notable homes displaying a wide range of architectural styles
  • * The rein of General Neal Dow during Portland prohibition era and his 1829 home
